Being Safe and Being Valued: Creating Equitable Workplaces for LGBTQIA+ Victorians

At Your Community Health, we believe that fostering workplaces that are safe, equitable, and inclusive for LGBTQIA+ individuals is not just a matter of fairness – it is critical for building vibrant, thriving communities. The Being Safe and Being Valued literature review, developed in collaboration with Transgender Victoria and proudly supported by WorkSafe Victoria’s WorkWell Respect Fund, provides an in-depth look at the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ employees in Australian workplaces and highlights actionable strategies for positive change.

Despite the growing visibility and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ communities, research continues to show that many LGBTQIA+ employees experience heightened rates of gendered violence, including microaggressions, verbal harassment, and systemic discrimination. These harmful experiences often lead to psychological strain, barriers to career progression, and financial insecurity. It is essential for organisations to recognise the urgency of addressing these issues and to implement tangible, evidence-based interventions. By promoting inclusive policies, providing effective LGBTQIA+ inclusion training, and creating spaces for visibility and support—like pride groups—workplaces can significantly enhance the well-being of LGBTQIA+ employees while fostering greater productivity and cohesion.
Initiatives such as the WorkWell toolkit offer vital resources for organisations committed to reducing workplace gendered violence and creating environments where LGBTQIA+ employees feel safe and valued. We encourage all workplace leaders to take proactive steps, collaborate with LGBTQIA+ communities, and strive toward a future where equity and inclusion are standard practices, not exceptions.
