Building skills and giving back: How volunteering helped me launch my first solo exhibition

You may not know the name Jason Smith, but you’ll know his photos. Jason is responsible for so many of the wonderful portraits that appear on our website and in our publications.

When he began volunteering, Jason was in the early stages of his photography career. Now, he is launching his first solo exhibition. (Some of his work is featured in this article).

We spoke to Jason about what volunteering has meant to him.

Tell us about what you do as a volunteer for Your Community Health.

I started as a volunteer photographer with Your Community Health in November 2015. Over the past 4 years I have had the absolute pleasure of working with and alongside some wonderful volunteers, staff and senior management. There have been many wonderful photoshoots and projects, which has included board members, staff and volunteer  portraits, content for annual report, annual general meeting and community events such as Harmony Day, Health Expo and International Women’s Day.

How has volunteering supported your professional work?

Volunteering has provided countless opportunities to practice my craft, try new techniques and develop existing skill sets. It also has contributed to building my professional portfolio and provided content for my online business platforms. It has also enriched my understanding of photography where human interaction is required.

And now, I am launching my first solo exhibition, exploring colour and geometry in Melbourne’s urban industrial landscape.

What do you like most about volunteering?

Volunteering provides me with an opportunity to give back….to contribute and share skills and knowledge that I have gained to community focused organisations, charities and non-government organisations. It gives me great pleasure and fulfilment to be able to help the very organsations that invest so much time and resources into helping members of the community.

What have you learnt through volunteering?

I have learnt a great deal about myself, my community and what’s important in life. It helps put things in perspective.

What would you say to other people who are considering volunteering?

I would highly recommend and encourage anyone wanting to volunteer to grasp the opportunity and actively find an organisation that fits for them and commit to a minimum 6 months period. I am confident that once started, volunteering will provide a rewarding and fulfilling experience and will be the beginning of a joy-filled journey.
