Supporting Local Health Access: PoolHub Initiative
Your Community Health are proud to support BreadHub, a dedicated volunteer-led group making a difference in our local area.
Recently we welcome our partners, BreadHub, to our Balit Wurun Health Centre to talk about their growing work in the community.
BreadHub is a volunteer-led group based in Darebin, made up of dedicated locals who are passionate about supporting others. The group began by collecting excess food and redistributing it to people in the community, helping to reduce food waste and relieve food insecurity.
Now, BreadHub is expanding their impact with a new project: PoolHub. This community-driven initiative is designed to help families access public swimming facilities by providing free pool passes to those who may face barriers accessing basic health facilities. To make sure these passes go where they are most needed, they are distributed through the Reservoir Neighbourhood House, to ensure the support is offered to families who will benefit most.
The project is centred on making health and wellbeing more accessible. While concession passes exist for low-income adults, many families still can not afford to attend the pool together. PoolHub helps remove this barrier, providing access to exercise, while also giving families the chance to enjoy meaningful time together.
This initiative was inspired by one of BreadHub’s own volunteers, whose personal recovery journey was supported through access to swimming. Their story highlights how something as ordinary as a swim can have extraordinary impacts on someone’s wellbeing.
We believe everyone should have the chance to enjoy the simple things that contribute to a healthy life like fresh food, exercise, and being part of a caring community. We look forward to seeing the PoolHub initiative continue to grow and make a difference in the lives of families across Darebin.
