Survey Report – LGBTQIA+ Victorians Experience of Gendered Violence at Work

Workplace gendered violence remains a harsh reality for many LGBTQIA+ workers in Victoria, according to the Being Valued – LGBTQIA+ Workplace Experience Survey, conducted by Your Community Health and Transgender Victoria with support from WorkSafe WorkWell. The findings reveal a systemic issue: nearly half of LGBTQIA+ workers surveyed had experienced gendered violence on the job, ranging from verbal abuse to psychological and sexual harassment.

The impact is severe – 87% reported harm to their mental health, with many leaving their jobs or careers entirely. Fear of retaliation and inaction keep many from reporting these incidents. Even when they do speak up, only a third feel supported by their employers.
But there is a path forward. Respondents called for meaningful action, including enforceable inclusion policies, gender affirmation leave, accessible all-gender facilities, and effective reporting systems. Cultural training and peer support were also highlighted as crucial.
To turn insight into action, the Being Valued Toolkit offers practical strategies for both employers and employees. It is a resource aimed at fostering genuine inclusion, empowering workers, and holding leadership accountable.
This is more than an inclusion issue—it is a workplace safety imperative. The time to act is now.
